Lightscapes

The pictures in this series were created during two visits to the island almost thirty years ago. Although the terrain is largely rocky and treeless, the landscape reveals itself slowly – cut by hidden valleys and gorges that conceal unexpected detail.

It was along the shoreline that my attention settled. I became increasingly drawn to the coastal rock formations and to the shifting interplay of light on water – reflections formed by both sun and moon as the sea moved against the stone.

Over many days and nights I worked alone, returning repeatedly to the same places, observing these subtle changes. Gradually, patterns began to emerge – first on Polaroid, and later as prints. The final selection of pictures remains among my most valued from that time.

This was a process of working slowly and selectively – allowing the work to reveal itself over time, rather than forcing it.

Although I had intended to return to Kythira to explore further, I have never made my way back. In some ways, that feels fitting – the work remains tied to that moment, held in memory as much as in place.
